How a Chinese name works

Chinese names put the family name first: one character, like 王 Wáng or 李 Lǐ. The given name follows, one or two characters chosen for what they mean, like 安琪 Ānqí, peaceful jade.

Parents pick characters that sound good together and carry a wish: strength, kindness, brightness. Every name here was chosen that way by a native speaker. Your Chinese surname echoes the sound of yours, the style sets the flavor, and your two words decide which names come first.

Why not just translate my name?

Emily written by sound is 埃米莉 Āimǐlì. That is how foreign names appear in news and translated books, and it reads as foreign right away. A Chinese name has a surname and characters with meaning, so it sounds like a name a Chinese person would have. We show you both.

Questions

What is my name in Chinese?

There are two answers. By sound, your name has a standard transliteration, used in news and books (Emily is 埃米莉). A real Chinese name is chosen instead: a surname and one or two characters with meaning. Enter your name above and pick a style to get eight, hear them, and choose the one that feels like you.

Is it a translation?

No. A translation keeps the sound but means nothing as a name. Ours are real Chinese names with meaning. Your surname echoes the sound of yours (Smith gets 史 Shǐ), and some names echo your first name too, like 茉莉 Mòlì (jasmine) for Emily.

What are the styles?

Styles under For real, like Classic and Poetic, are names you could really use. Drama & legends sound like heroes of kung fu novels and immortals in fantasy dramas, and Just for fun has names like your grandparents' generation and online handles with no surname at all. Those are for fun: share them, laugh, don't tattoo them.

Can I use it for a tattoo?

Pick a name from a For real style. Every name is chosen and reviewed by a native speaker. A tattoo is permanent, though: show the characters to a Chinese speaker you trust first, and copy them exactly, stroke by stroke, from your name page.

How do I pronounce it?

Tap the speaker next to any name to hear it in the voice of Tingting, the host of Chinese For Real. The pinyin shows the tones, and each character has its own sound and stroke order.
