Mom Called Me at 3 AM

早zǎo上shang三sān点diǎn， 妈mā妈ma打dǎ电diàn话huà来lái了le！ 

At three in the morning, my mom called!

我wǒ叫jiàoMike ， 我wǒ是shì美Měi国guó人rén。 

My name is Mike. I'm American.

我wǒ在zài中Zhōng国guó学xué汉Hàn语yǔ， 一yí个ge人rén住zhù在zài六liù号hào。 

I'm studying Chinese in China. I live on my own, in Building 6.

星xīng期qī天tiān晚wǎn上shang十shí一yī点diǎn， 我wǒ睡shuì觉jiào了le。 

On Sunday night, I went to sleep at eleven.

早zǎo上shang三sān点diǎn， 电diàn话huà来lái了le， 是shì妈mā妈ma。 

At three in the morning, the phone rang. It was Mom.

我wǒ想xiǎng： 三sān点diǎn？ 家jiā里li有yǒu什shén么me事shì？ 

I thought: three o'clock? Is something wrong at home?

妈mā妈ma说shuō：“ Mike ！ 你nǐ好hǎo吗ma？” 

Mom said, "Mike! How are you?"

我wǒ说shuō：“ 妈mā妈ma…… 我wǒ在zài睡shuì觉jiào。” 

I said, "Mom... I'm sleeping."

妈mā妈ma说shuō：“ 睡shuì觉jiào？ 现xiàn在zài是shì下xià午wǔ三sān点diǎn！” 

Mom said, "Sleeping? It's three in the afternoon!"

我wǒ说shuō：“ 你nǐ那nà儿r是shì下xià午wǔ三sān点diǎn。” 

I said, "It's three in the afternoon where you are."

“ 我wǒ这zhè儿r是shì早zǎo上shang三sān点diǎn！” 

"It's three in the morning here!"

妈mā妈ma说shuō：“ 对duì不bu起qǐ！ 大dà家jiā都dōu在zài家jiā， 我wǒ太tài高gāo兴xìng了le！” 

Mom said, "Sorry! Everyone's home, I got too excited!"

妈mā妈ma说shuō：“ 你nǐ爸bà爸ba也yě想xiǎng看kàn你nǐ！” 

Mom said, "Your dad wants to see you too!"

爸bà爸ba来lái了le， 他tā说shuō汉Hàn语yǔ：“ 你nǐ好hǎo！ 再zài见jiàn！” 

Dad came on and said in Chinese, "Nǐ hǎo! Zàijiàn!"

我wǒ说shuō：“ 好hǎo！ 再zài见jiàn！ 我wǒ睡shuì觉jiào了le！” 

I said, "OK! Zàijiàn! I'm going back to sleep!"

妈mā妈ma说shuō：“ 不bú要yào说shuō再zài见jiàn！ 姐jiě姐jie也yě来lái了le！” 

Mom said, "Don't say goodbye! Your sister's here too!"

姐jiě姐jie说shuō：“ 妈mā妈ma！ 他tā要yào睡shuì觉jiào！” 

My sister said, "Mom! He needs to sleep!"

姐jiě姐jie的de儿ér子zi也yě来lái了le， 他tā三sān岁suì。 

My sister's son came on too. He's three.

他tā也yě说shuō汉Hàn语yǔ：“ 你nǐ好hǎo！ 谢xiè谢xie！” 

He spoke Chinese too: "Nǐ hǎo! Xièxie!"

我wǒ说shuō：“ 你nǐ好hǎo…… 不bú客kè气qi……” 

I said, "Nǐ hǎo... bú kèqi..."

妈mā妈ma说shuō：“ 面miàn包bāo也yě想xiǎng你nǐ！” 

Mom said, "Bread misses you too!"

面miàn包bāo是shì我wǒ的de猫māo， 它tā在zài爸bà爸ba妈mā妈ma家jiā。 

Bread is my cat. It lives at my parents' place.

我wǒ在zài手shǒu机jī上shàng看kàn见jiàn了le面miàn包bāo。 

I saw Bread on the phone.

下xià午wǔ三sān点diǎn， 面miàn包bāo在zài睡shuì觉jiào！ 

At three in the afternoon, Bread was asleep!

早zǎo上shang三sān点diǎn， 我wǒ在zài看kàn猫māo睡shuì觉jiào！ 

At three in the morning, I was watching my cat sleep!

妈mā妈ma问wèn：“ 你nǐ有yǒu中Zhōng国guó朋péng友you了le吗ma？” 

Mom asked, "Do you have Chinese friends now?"

我wǒ说shuō：“ 有yǒu了le！ 我wǒ有yǒu一yí个ge中Zhōng国guó朋péng友you了le！” 

I said, "Yes! I have a Chinese friend now!"

妈mā妈ma说shuō：“ 我wǒ说shuō了le吧ba！” 

Mom said, "Told you so!"

妈mā妈ma问wèn：“ 你nǐ十shí二èr月yuè的de考kǎo试shì……” 

Mom asked, "Your exam in December..."

我wǒ说shuō：“ 我wǒ知zhī道dào。 我wǒ天tiān天tiān学xué习xí。” 

I said, "I know. I study every day."

我wǒ想xiǎng： 考kǎo不bù好hǎo， 我wǒ要yào回huí美Měi国guó。 

I thought: if I don't do well, I have to go back to America.

妈mā妈ma说shuō：“ 学xué习xí， 也yě要yào睡shuì觉jiào！” 

Mom said, "Study, but get some sleep too!"

我wǒ说shuō：“ 对duì！ 妈mā妈ma， 我wǒ现xiàn在zài要yào睡shuì觉jiào！” 

I said, "Right! Mom, I need to sleep now!"

妈mā妈ma说shuō：“ 好hǎo！ 多duō穿chuān衣yī服fu！” 

Mom said, "OK! Dress warmly!"

我wǒ在zài睡shuì觉jiào…… 多duō穿chuān衣yī服fu？ 

I'm sleeping... dress warmly?

三sān点diǎn半bàn， 我wǒ睡shuì觉jiào了le。 

At half past three, I went back to sleep.

七qī点diǎn， 我wǒ起qǐ床chuáng了le， 我wǒ很hěn想xiǎng睡shuì觉jiào。 

At seven, I got up. I was so sleepy.

我wǒ去qù我wǒ家jiā外wài边bian买mǎi包bāo子zi。 

I went outside my place to buy baozi.

阿ā姨yí在zài那nà儿r卖mài包bāo子zi， 她tā也yě住zhù六liù号hào。 

Auntie sells baozi there. She lives in Building 6 too.

早zǎo上shang， 买mǎi包bāo子zi的de人rén很hěn多duō。 

In the morning, lots of people buy baozi.

一yí个ge人rén和hé阿ā姨yí说shuō：“ 你nǐ看kàn他tā， 很hěn想xiǎng睡shuì觉jiào。” 

Someone said to Auntie, "Look at him. He's so sleepy."

“ 晚wǎn上shang都dōu在zài看kàn手shǒu机jī吧ba。” 

"Probably on his phone all night."

我wǒ说shuō：“ 对duì， 我wǒ看kàn了le半bàn个gè小xiǎo时shí手shǒu机jī。” 

I said, "Yes, I was on my phone for half an hour."

那nà个ge人rén看kàn我wǒ， 不bù说shuō话huà了le。 

The person looked at me and went quiet.

我wǒ说shuō：“ 手shǒu机jī里lǐ， 是shì我wǒ妈mā妈ma！” 

I said, "And on the phone was my mom!"

“ 她tā早zǎo上shang三sān点diǎn打dǎ电diàn话huà！” 

"She called at three in the morning!"

那nà个ge人rén说shuō：“ 我wǒ妈mā妈ma也yě是shì！ 早zǎo上shang五wǔ点diǎn打dǎ电diàn话huà！” 

The person said, "My mom too! She calls at five in the morning!"

阿ā姨yí说shuō：“ 今jīn天tiān冷lěng， 多duō穿chuān衣yī服fu！” 

Auntie said, "It's cold today. Dress warmly!"

我wǒ说shuō：“ 我wǒ妈mā妈ma早zǎo上shang三sān点diǎn也yě说shuō了le！” 

I said, "My mom said that at three this morning too!"

阿ā姨yí说shuō：“ 中Zhōng国guó妈mā妈ma、 美Měi国guó妈mā妈ma， 都dōu说shuō这zhè个ge！” 

Auntie said, "Chinese moms, American moms, they all say it!"

我wǒ们men这zhè儿r有yǒu一yí个ge人rén， 名míng字zi也yě叫jiào“ 六liù号hào”。 

Around here, there's someone whose name is also "No. 6."

这zhè个ge人rén在zài手shǒu机jī上shàng说shuō我wǒ的de事shì。 

This person writes about me on their phone.

我wǒ问wèn阿ā姨yí：“‘ 六liù号hào’ 是shì您nín吗ma？” 

I asked Auntie, "Are you 'No. 6'?"

阿ā姨yí说shuō：“ 不bú是shì我wǒ！ 我wǒ也yě想xiǎng知zhī道dào是shì谁shéi！” 

Auntie said, "It's not me! I want to know who it is too!"

这zhè个ge时shí候hou，“ 六liù号hào” 说shuō： 

Just then, "No. 6" wrote:

“ 六liù号hào的de美Měi国guó人rén， 今jīn天tiān很hěn想xiǎng睡shuì觉jiào。” 

"The American in Building 6 is very sleepy today."

阿ā姨yí在zài卖mài包bāo子zi， 没méi有yǒu看kàn手shǒu机jī。 

Auntie was selling baozi. She wasn't looking at her phone.

那nà个ge人rén在zài吃chī包bāo子zi， 也yě没méi有yǒu看kàn手shǒu机jī。 

That woman was eating baozi. She wasn't looking at her phone either.

不bú是shì阿ā姨yí， 也yě不bú是shì她tā。 

It's not Auntie, and it's not her.

这zhè个ge人rén现xiàn在zài在zài这zhè儿r， 在zài看kàn我wǒ！ 

This person is here right now, watching me!
